Knitted Together In Love

"That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love” Colossians 2:2 KJV.

"Years ago, someone offered me a prayer shawl at a time of need. I was deeply moved by this kind gesture and the blessing on the label," remembers Paula Hayward.  It was this experience, coupled with her love of textiles and creating garments of comfort for at-risk women, that inspired her to be a part of and organize her first Prayer Shawl Ministry, and she continues this practice today with her fourth such effort, this time at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church.

Having participated in similar ministries before, Paula has witnessed how the making and distributing of prayer shawls in times of particular need can knit a congregation together.

"I feel blessed beyond measure. There is a buoyancy of spirit expressed in our circle," she states. In a contemplative atmosphere with soothing music, the group gathers monthly to share creative design ideas, discuss special needs of congregants whomight benefit from a prayer shawl, and pray throughout their time together.

The prayer shawls do more than serve the practical purpose of warmth or even decoration. Each stitch of a shawl or lap wrap is prayed over. The shawls and blankets are a symbol of comfort and healing to members of our church family in need. It is a tangible reminder that the shawl recipients are not alone and that others care for them.

Paula's vision for this ministry is clear. It is NOT a quilting or crochet group; rather it is an intentional, loving ministry consisting of talented fiber artists who knit, crochet, orquilt. The ministry not only blesses those who receive the prayer shawls but also has served to bless the artists who gather.

Ann Carter, one of the ministry members, shares about her experience as part of this group. After delivering a prayer shawl to a church member's home, she remarked, "Her family was there, and she was dressed in pink & and the prayer shawl was pink. She & her family were both blessed." Ann also loves getting to know other group members. "I have even met a new friend. We share stories, fellowship, and learn new techniques."

This ministry has meant a great deal to Ann Carter, who lost her husband in 2017. It has provided a way for her to connect with others and give back to the people who so lovingly have cared for her over the last year. "People at HAB have always shown so much love to me. I feel good about contributing to such a kind and meaningful ministry that encourages others. It encourages me personally and spiritually."

There is no doubt that the Prayer Shawl Ministry is a blessing to those who receive their gifts, but equally significant is the gift of community that it gives to those who are a part of it. When we think about expanding community through ministry, we can't underestimate the community connections that happen from within.
